State and Capital of India Formation After the independence in 1947, India was divided into two nations, India and Pakistan. India adopted a federal structure with a constitution in 1950; the Indian constitution took 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days to create. The Indian Constitution is known as the longest-written constitution in the world, containing 146,385 words in its English version. Ultimately, India established a union of states with centralized control in certain areas while granting autonomy to others.
At the time of independence, India consisted of British-controlled provinces and about 565 princely states; the princely states had their own ruler. The princely states were given the choice to join either India or Pakistan or remain independent. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and V.P. Menon made a major effort to integrate this princely state in India, maximally with negotiation and then with military intervention. example, Hyderabad and Junagarh military intervention with Operation Polo in 1948.
