The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to 12 new project proposals under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP).
This ambitious initiative, with an estimated investment of Rs. 28,602 crore, is set to transform India’s economic geography, creating a robust network of industrial nodes and cities that promise to significantly boost economic growth and enhance global competitiveness.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commission India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Arighat (S-3), at a quiet event in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant boost to India’s nuclear deterrence and second-strike capability.
This submarine, armed with 750-km range K-15 nuclear ballistic missiles, will patrol the Indo-Pacific under India’s strategic command.
The commissioning will be attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, Vice Admiral Suraj Berry (head of Indian Strategic Command), and top DRDO officials.
With the commissioning of INS Arighat, India now has two SSBNs – INS Arihant (S-2) and INS Arighat – reinforcing its nuclear triad. The SSBNs, capable of remaining underwater for extended periods, provide significant strategic leverage and deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi earlier on August 28, chaired the meeting of the 44th edition of PRAGATI, the ICT-based multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation, involving Centre and State governments. This was the first meeting in the third term.
In the meeting, seven significant projects were reviewed, which included two projects relating to road connectivity, two rail projects and one project each of the Coal, Power and Water Resources sectors.
The cost of these projects totalled more than Rs. 76,500 crore and relate to 11 States and UTs viz., Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Goa, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.

Every year on August 29, the world observes the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. Since the dawn of the nuclear age in 1945, over 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted, leaving a legacy of environmental damage and human suffering.
The nuclear age began on July 16, 1945, when the United States detonated a 20-kiloton atomic bomb codenamed “Trinity” in New Mexico. This test marked the beginning of a new and terrifying chapter in human history.
Shortly after, the world witnessed the catastrophic power of nuclear weapons when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively.

Typhoon Shanshan, moving at a slow pace akin to a bicycle, has begun unleashing heavy rain across southern Japan. This storm is expected to impact most of the country with strong winds, high waves, and significant rainfall.
On August 28, 2024, weather officials issued the highest-level warnings as the typhoon approaches southern Kyushu, with predictions of up to 60 centimeters (23.6 inches) of rain within 24 hours. The situation has led to considerable concern over potential extensive damage.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall in southern Kyushu on Thursday, bringing severe weather conditions across the Japanese archipelago.
