  1. BLUE REVOLUTION: 4 YEARS OF PRADHAN MANTRI MATSYA SAMPADA YOJANA –
  • The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), launched in 2020, is a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming India’s fisheries sector and enhancing the welfare of fishermen.
  • This scheme, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, addresses critical issues in fish production, productivity, quality, technology, and infrastructure while strengthening the fisheries value chain.
  • With an investment of Rs. 20,050 crore over five years (2020-21 to 2024-25), PMMSY targets inland fisheries and aquaculture, ensuring robust food security and supporting fisheries micro and small enterprises through its Central Sector Sub-scheme, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), which has a budget of over Rs. 6,000 crore.
  • On its 4th anniversary in September 2024, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh, introduced several initiatives.

 

  1. DRDO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES FIRST PHASE TRIALS OF LIGHT TANK ‘ZORAWAR’-
  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the preliminary automotive trials of the Indian Light Tank, Zorawar, on September 13, 2024. The versatile platform, developed for high-altitude deployment, demonstrated exceptional performance in desert terrain, meeting all objectives.
  • The firing performance in this phase achieved the required accuracy on designated targets, showcasing its combat readiness.
  • Zorawar was developed by DRDO’s Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Contributions from numerous Indian industries, including MSMEs, highlight India’s growing indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

 

  1. INDIA-OMAN JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE AL NAJAH –
  • The Indian Army has sent a team to participate in the 5th edition of the India-Oman Joint Military Exercise AL NAJAH, which is being held from 13th to 26th September 2024 in Salalah, Oman.
  • This exercise is an important event that has been helping improve military cooperation between the two countries since it first started in 2015.
  • The AL NAJAH exercise is held every two years and alternates between India and Oman. The last edition took place in Mahajan, Rajasthan. The main goal of each exercise is to improve the joint operational abilities of the two armies, especially in situations involving counter-terrorism.

 

  1. AYUSHMAN BHARAT EXPANDS COVERAGE FOR ELDERLY INDIANS OVER 70 –
  • The Union Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This expansion now includes all Indians aged 70 and older, regardless of their income. Registration for this extended health coverage is expected to start soon, with the formal launch by the Prime Minister to follow.
  • The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), launched in 2018, is a cashless health insurance scheme. It provides ₹5 lakh per family per year for healthcare. It covers hospital treatments for over 10 crore families, which equals about 50 crore (500 million) people. The scheme also ensures that even pre-existing conditions are covered, and it’s available without the need to pay a premium. Beneficiaries are identified using data from the 2011 census, targeting families in need.
  • Anyone who is 70 years or older can sign up for the scheme. Registration can be done through the Ayushman Bharat app or at designated Ayushman Bharat counters located at government health facilities. Aadhaar (a unique ID card in India) will be used to verify eligibility during registration.

 

  1. CM KEJRIWAL GRANTED BAIL IN EXCISE POLICY CASE, LEAVES TIHAR JAIL –
  • Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the excise policy case.
  • Senior AAP leaders, including Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Manish Sisodia, welcomed him, raising slogans in support despite the rain.
  • Kejriwal had been arrested by the CBI in June and had challenged the Delhi High Court’s ruling that upheld his arrest.
