  1. NOAH LYLES WINS U.S. MEN’S 100-METER OLYMPIC GOLD IN 20 YEARS –
  • American sprinter Noah Lyles clinched gold in the men’s 100-meter sprint at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The race was one of the closest in Olympic history, with Lyles finishing just 0.005 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson. Lyles’ time of 9.784 seconds narrowly beat Thompson’s 9.789 seconds. Team USA’s Fred Kerley secured bronze with a time of 9.81 seconds.
  • Lyles’ victory marks the first time an American has won the 100-meter gold since Justin Gatlin in Athens 2004. This race also saw a historic number of seven men finishing under 9.90 seconds, shattering the 10-second barrier.
  • Despite a slow start, Lyles surged in the final stretch, overtaking competitors and crossing the finish line in a dramatic photo finish.

 

  1. STAR SHOOTER MANU BHAKER SET TO BE INDIA’S FLAGBEARER IN CLOSING CEREMONY –
  • Manu Bhaker, India’s two-time Olympic bronze medallist, has been chosen to be India’s flagbearer for the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics. According to sources from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Bhaker will represent India as the women’s flagbearer during the event.
  • India’s men’s flagbearer for the ceremony is yet to be confirmed. The closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place on August 11. Bhaker excelled in Paris, earning two bronze medals and setting several new records.
  • The Paris Olympics has been a redemption for the 22-year-old shooter. During the 10m air pistol qualification round in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, her gun malfunctioned, which led to a loss of time.

 

  1. DG SSB DALJIT SINGH CHAWDHARY TAKES OVER ADDITIONAL CHARGE OF DIRECTOR GENERAL, BSF –
  • Daljit Singh Chawdhary, the Director General of Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), took over the additional charge of Director General Border Security Force on August 3.
  • “On 03rd August 2024, Shri Daljit Singh Chawdhary ,IPS Director General SSB took over the additional charge of Director General Border Security Force, the largest Border Guarding Force of the world.
  • Daljit Singh Chawdhary is a 1990 batch officer of the Indian Police Service, Uttar Pradesh cadre. He assumed the charge of DG SSB on January 23, 2024.
  • In his 34 years of service, he has served in different capacities in Uttar Pradesh and also has the privilege of serving on Central Deputation since 2017, as ADG in Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and as SDG in Central Reserve Police Force.

 

  1. CABINET APPROVES EIGHT HIGH-SPEED ROAD CORRIDOR PROJECTS –
  • Recently, the Union Cabinet approved a large plan for eight high-speed road corridor projects totaling 936 kilometers, with a total investment of ₹50,000 crore. These projects are designed to improve connectivity for both pilgrims and freight transport across various regions.
  • The approved projects include a four-lane ring road in Ayodhya, this road is designed to make it easier for pilgrims to visit the Ram Mandir. A bypass in Guwahati, this road will help improve travel and connectivity in the region.

 

  1. GERMANY JOINED U.S.-LED UN COMMAND IN SOUTH KOREA –
  • Germany became the 18th member of the U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea, which helps police the border with North Korea and defends South Korea in case of war.
  • Germany’s inclusion highlights its commitment to global security and enhances the UNC’s expertise and capabilities.
  • The move underscores the expanding alliances to strengthen regional security amid global tensions.
